Jesús llevó a tres de sus apóstoles a un monte alto (se cree que fue el Monte Tabor), y allí les manifestó su gloria al aparecer ante ellos radiante de luz. Pero esta visión tiene un sentido más extenso pues la presencia de Moisés y Elías, grandes profetas del Antiguo Testamento, avala y da testimonio de la divinidad de Jesús, ante estos discípulos. En esta visión se tiende claramente el enlace entre el Evangelio y la fe religiosa del pueblo judío. Santiago, Juan y Pedro (futura cabeza de la Iglesia) son testigos de que la voz del Padre y la presencia de esos grandes profetas respaldan el ministerio de Jesús. Los profetas hablan de su “partida”, refiriéndose a su muerte como un sacrificio que redimirá al Mundo. Y el Padre dice: “¡Este es mi Hijo amado, en quien tengo complacencia; óiganlo!”

Esta visión no solo les permite a los discípulos contemplar un anticipo de la Gloria de la Resurrección de Jesús, sino prepararse para entender su sacrificio y muerte, y asimismo convencerse de que es el Mesías enviado de Dios, pese al abierto rechazo de las autoridades religiosas judías.

La Iglesia ha fijado el seis de agosto como fecha para conmemorar este trascendente episodio de la vida pública de Jesús, que es narrado en tres de los Evangelios: Mateo 17:1-9, Marcos 9: 2-10, Lucas 9: 28-36. También se recuerda en la liturgia del segundo domingo de Cuaresma. La Transfiguración del Señor es el cuarto Misterio Luminoso del Santo Rosario.

English: Jesus took three of his apostles to a high mount ( it is believed it was Mount Tabor), and there He manifested his glory appearing radiant of light before them. But this vision has a greater significance for the presence of Moses and Elias, great prophets of the Old Testament, endorses and gives testimony of Jesus divinity before these disciples. In this vision a clear link is built between the Gospel and the religious faith of Jewish people. James, John and Peter (future head of the Church), are witnesses that the voice of the Father and the presence of those great prophets support the ministry of Jesus. The prophets speak about His “decease” referring to His death as a sacrifice that will redeem the World. And the Father says: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear Him!” This vision not only allows the disciples to foretaste the Glory of the Resurrection of Jesus, but to prepare to understand His sacrifice and death, and also to convince themselves that He is the Messiah sent by God, in spite of the open rejection of the Jewish religious authorities.

The Church has established August sixth as the date to commemorate this transcendental episode of the public life of Jesus, which is narrated in three of the Gospels: Matthew 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-10, Luke 9:28-36. Likewise is recalled in the liturgy of the second Sunday of the Lent. The Transfiguration of the Lord is the Fourth Luminous Mystery of the Holy Rosary.
